Guaranteed Basic Income Program Coming for Low-Income Residents

In a continued agenda item at its July 5 meeting, the City Council approved an agreement with Usio Inc. to serve as the financial partner for Rise Up Alameda, the city’s Guaranteed Basic Income (GBI) Pilot Program. The program will pave the way for a select number of Alameda residents to receive a major financial benefit.

Encinal Softball Players Seek Field Improvements

Encinal High School softball players are not happy with their homefield and are seeking ways to improve it or a new place to call home. Unlike its baseball team that plays on campus, the softball team plays home games at Lower Washington Park, an Alameda Parks and Recreation Department (ARPD) field that has triggered safety concerns and other challenges for the Jets.

Is Campus Dining Worth the Price?

Recently, a student at Seattle University posted a message on a non Seattle U affiliated Instagram account @sea.ttleuconfessions seeking alternative dining options because they were finding it difficult to afford to eat more than one meal a day through dining services on campus. The student’s request speaks to a bigger debate regarding whether the dining options are fairly priced or if they could stand to be more affordable and accessible.

For too many children and adults in America, this statement hits home. Neighborhood parks that are supposed to be centers of the community and a place where people of all abilities, shapes, and sizes can exercise and play are not designed for inclusive play, thus fostering the spirit of exclusion rather than inclusion.
